Elle a une atmosphère unique et des valeurs culturelles et historiques, qui sont fortement influencées par son emplacement, son histoire et ses monuments.
Emplacement :
Emplacement lucratif, près de la capitale de la Slovaquie (à 30 km), avec la possibilité de déplacement vers le travail ou la culture. Elle représente également, une localité intéressante, paysagère et pittoresque, au pied des Petites Carpates, ce qui est déterminant pour le développement des activités touristiques et sportives. La partie importante de Modra est l´aire de loisirs « Modra Harmónia » ainsi que le chalet « Zochova chata », qui attirent les touristes et aide à développer le tourisme.
Histoire :
Les premières traces écrites sur la ville remontent aux 12e - 13e siècles. Elle a progressivement gagné son statut de ville royale libre en 1607 et possédait déjà sa propre armoirie. La ville est connue comme faisant partie de la route des vins des Petites Carpates. C´est une région viticole avec des vignobles privés et des établissements viticoles. Les premières traces écrites sur la viticulture développée, émanent du 14e siècle. En termes de développement économique (hormis l'agriculture traditionnelle) c´est une petite ville connue pour l´exploitation des mines, les meuneries et surtout pour la céramique. La ghilde de céramique a été fondée en 1636. La poterie, la céramique ont été développées pour les besoins des viticulteurs. La décoration typique de la céramique de Modra s´est maintenue jusqu’à lors. La majolique a progressé de l'artisanat vers une dimension plutôt artistique.
En termes culturel et sociétal, la ville peut se vanter de personnalités qui ont influencé son renom. À la ville sont liées, de nombreuses personnalités nationales (surtout l´éveilleur national et le codificateur de la langue slovaque Ľudovít Štúr), de nombreux écrivains (Vincent Šikula), des artistes (le céramiste Ignác Bizmayer), qui ont laissé en mémoire une empreinte profonde et indélébile.
Architecture :
Le développement de l'architecture de la ville a été principalement influencé par la viticulture. Les monuments conservés reflètent l’existence d´une Eglise évangélique aussi forte que catholique. Le plus ancien monument architectural sacral de la ville est l'église gothique de « Sv. Jána Krstiteľa » - Saint Jean-Baptiste (de la moitie du 14e siècle). Les églises protestantes furent construites progressivement au début du 19e siècle. L´église catholique romaine « sv. Štefana kráľa » a été conçue par le célèbre architecte Ignace Feigler de la ville voisine de Trnava et construite dans le style classique en 1876. Exceptionnelle et toujours conservée , est la partie de la fortification municipale du début du 17esiècle, avec sa porte supérieure et son bastion Renaissance. Parmi les principaux édifices historiques on trouve la chapelle de « Panny Márie Snežne j» - Notre-Dame des Neiges de 1760. Dans la ville il existe de nombreux édifices intéressants, qui illustrent l'histoire de la ville dont le Musée de « Ľudovít Štúr », les maisons viticoles et leurs cours intérieures, le musée de la majolique de Modra.
Le centre-ville fut déclaré comme zone classée et monument historique depuis 1991.
