The institute's employees are dedicated to areas such as ecologically design, sustainable development, environmental protection, mitigating the negative impacts of human activities on the environment and the consequences of climate change, using renewable energy sources, or implementing innovative design processes in the creation of sustainable architecture, smart, resilient cities and product design. The common denominator of their interdisciplinary research includes terms such as sustainability, resilience, innovation and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) as tools for designing the present and the future, which are the main objectives of various domestic and international projects/funds the IEEA staff has been participating in.

The research of the IEEA employees focuses on the following areas in the field of construction, architecture, urban planning and art:
- Architecture, the city, culture and sustainability
Robert Špaček, Ján Legény, Peter Morgenstein, Klára Macháčová, Julián Keppl
(PhD Students: Tomáš Hubinský, Filip Krump, Manfred Sonnleithner)
The main focus of this research group is the investigation of the relationship between the human-made environment (city/architecture) and nature. Its members have for many years devoted themselves to examining design based on the solar access principle (using solar energy) with the application of the concept of the solar envelope and contemporary ICT, such as scripts and algorithms. They primarily focus on reducing the energy consumption of buildings, entire districts, and cities. Research is carried out in the field of energy cooperation, positive energy districts (PEDs), the use of solar appliances and other renewable energy sources, the study of urban heat islands (UHIs), and other factors affecting the city's microclimate. The scope of its research is moving from the building scale to complex systems, the city, from sustainability to the term resiliency. All these interests are also accompanied by research in the field of urban democracy, urban decency, city history, smart cities, and smart networks or the concept of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED). Cultural sustainability, the protection of historical monuments and the reduction of their energy demand, or the investigation of new methods in architectural education play a key role in the research of this group.
- Tradition and innovation in architecture / materials
Henrich Pifko, Tibor Varga, Lukáš Šíp, Lorant Krajcsovics
(PhD Students: Michal Križo, Veronika Krausková)
The research group focuses on the application of materials and technologies for the ecological operation of buildings, the life cycle assessment of buildings (LCA), on research in the field of construction using natural materials such as wood, clay, straw, stone, on natural insulation materials, modern high-tech alternatives, recycling, etc. Other areas of research include vegetated roofing systems / facades, measuring the impact of materials and technologies on the internal quality of buildings (well-being), or evaluating the quality of the environment as a whole. Technologies ensuring economic and ecological operation of buildings, principles of architectural design linked to EU2030 strategy, Energy Roadmap 2050, use of renewable energy sources related to architecture and the city, energy and material flows, energy efficiency assessment, and integrated design are fundamental in this area. In the field of education, the research group members focus on the integration of design-build projects, i.e. projects where the provision of design and construction services is ensured from the initial concept to implementation.
- Digital tools of architecture and urban design
Martin Uhrík, Roman Hajtmanek
(PhD Students: Alexander Kupko, Michaela Krpalová)
Group members primarily develop conceptual design skills in the field of architectural design using computer and digital (parametric) composition. They focus on form modelling, 3D printing possibilities, creation of digital 3D content, programming, data processing and visualization, implementation of virtual and augmented reality, prototyping and fabrication or how to transform digital design into practice. Another segment consists of research in the field of machine learning and the use of neural networks. The main IT tools include SketchUp, Rhino, Grasshopper or any 3D modelling programs supporting export to STL files. In general, colleagues are devoted to experimental and unconventional approaches and procedures that bring technologically innovative, conceptual or radically critical solutions, processes or approaches enriching contemporary creative thinking in architecture, design and urbanism.
- Artistic Research – interventions / scenic architecture / design
Tomáš Hubinský (PhD Student), Ján Legény
In Slovakia, one includes design under the artistic disciplines, architecture and urban planning explicitly in the technical sciences. Abroad is more benevolent, there they manoeuvre between the Arts&Humanities and the technical sciences. Architectural creation/design is undoubtedly integrally linked with art, beauty (in Greek: kalòs) has accompanied human civilization since primordial time, and in connection with the spiritual dimension of goodness (in Greek: kalòs kai agathòs) represented the standard of living on earth for the ancient Greeks. The members of the group therefore partially devote themselves to the currently discussed artistic research / research through art, respectively scientific research that touches or draws from art, which as a means of scientific activity has its roots already in the Renaissance. They focus their attention on processes known abroad under commonly used terms such as research in the arts, artistic research, practice-based research in and through arts and practice-led research, which address, among other things, the sensory and experiential dimensions of the research topic and incorporate embodiment and aesthetic processes into its methods and forms of expression. Transdisciplinary approaches, use of ICT, inclusion, reflection and others become the basis in the areas of small local (site-specific) interventions, scenic architecture and small design.
