The focus on the issue of public buildings has been a permanent part of the orientation of the Faculty of Architecture since its inception. Since its very beginning, it has been associated with the names of prominent architects and educators, such as Professor Emil Belluš and Professor Vladimir Karfik. At present, students of the Faculty of Architecture have the opportunity to consult their studio projects of public buildings with our colleagues, prominent Slovak architects, such as Dipl. Ing. arch. Štefan Polakovič, holder of the prestigious awards of the Slovak Chamber of Architects CE.ZA.AR., Professor Vladimír Šimkovič, Associate Professor Márius Žitňanský, and Associate Professor Alexander Schleicher, who have won several awards in architectural competitions.
The mission of the Institute of Public Buildings is a creative, pedagogical and research-related activity in the field of architectural design creation for administrative, educational, retail, service, transport, public catering, cultural, health care, sports and leisure time buildings. New trends in design of public buildings and premises are the main content of the Institute’s research and the acquired knowledge is applied in pedagogical and creative activities. The pedagogical activity is focused mostly on studio designs, since they demonstrate the ability to synthesize the knowledge gained in the theoretical preparatory subjects.
In the bachelor's degree programme, the Institute prepares future architects for practice through courses related to the basic requirements and for theory of the architectural design of public buildings. Assignments of the studio projects are frequently focused on the requirements of practice which have arisen through cooperation with the city councils and municipalities or with public institutions. The bachelor's degree program is completed by successful defence of final project - project for building permit.
During master's degree programme, the Institute accredits the practical course Design Studio III, and Studio Seminary. Moreover, the Institute participates in the teaching of other practical and theoretical subjects of the second-degree studies. The studio projects aim to solve specific assignments based on real requirements related to practice, and they are related with a solution to national and international architectural competitions. The master‘s degree programme is completed by a master’s project focused on the design of public buildings.
Doctoral studies are provided by the Institute both internally and externally. Dissertation topics are related to the research activities of the Institute, such as digital architecture, free modelling in architecture, universal design, multisensory environmental perception, or qualitative research related to user quality of public spaces and buildings.
