The Faculty of Architecture and Design is presenting its projects at the international event UNFOLD during the Milan Design Week at the BASE Milano cultural centre, 15 – 21 April 2024. The projects of the vertical studio Data[LAB] are concerned with the concept of the object, which presents objects as dynamic processes, constantly changing and adapting to their surroundings. The design of the objects uses computational design tools to create virtual models that are materialized using experimental ecologically sustainable materials such as beeswax-impregnated cotton fabric and mycelium from o.z. Sink Hub. The works thus refer to living in harmony with nature and encourage its renewal.
Laura Zolnianska // Hivebeam
Design of a series of interactive lamps for a bedside table inspired by wild bees and their architectural creations. The generative design has created a number of virtual lamp variants that can be produced using environmentally sustainable materials. In the context of bees and their calming effects, a cotton fabric impregnated with beeswax was chosen, which features unique traces of use. The interior of the lamp, made up of mycelium, also has a natural expression. In order to create a soothing atmosphere that promotes relaxation, the lamp emits the sound of the gentle buzzing of bees.
Barbora Hagarová // Momentum
The project explores biomimicry and bio-inclusive ethics, using computer simulations of physarum polycephalum microorganism growth to generate solid spatial structures. In the simulations, the microorganism grew around 3D scans of the human body in natural sitting positions. This generated ergonomic and adaptable forms that reflect the natural cycle of growth, decomposition and renewal in nature. The process thus resulted in a series of chairs made of mycelium with local, organically dyed wool, responding dynamically to changing demands.
